Denim Triple Bar Chenille Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

I love blue and texture so I created this raised line blanket pattern using my favorite color and front post stitches for a lovely combination.

The pattern is an easy repeat of half double crochet and triple front post. The triple front post stitches make a double raised line design.

I love anything with texture, especially when it still feels soft and cozy for a baby blanket. This one came together because I wanted something that looked a little more interesting than plain rows, but still wasn’t complicated to make while watching TV.

The raised “triple bar” lines are what make this blanket stand out—they give it that denim-style texture I really like without making the pattern hard to follow. It’s basically a simple repeat, but it looks like you did a lot more work than you actually did (which is always a win in my book).

I’ve made a few versions of this now, and it works up nicely in chenille or blanket yarn. It also gets that really squishy, soft feel once it’s finished, which is exactly what I want for baby gifts.

Abbreviations – US Term

  • chchain stitch
  • fptr – front post triple crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • st/sts - stitch/stitches
  • yo- yarn over

This pattern uses a simple repeat of half double crochet and front post triple crochet. If you’ve never done front post stitches before, the only thing to watch for is that you’re working around the stitch instead of into the top loops.

It sounds more complicated than it is—once you do a couple rows, you can actually “see” the raised lines forming, and it gets pretty rhythmic.

I usually find this is one of those patterns where the first row feels the slowest, and then everything clicks after that.

Approx. size of blanket: 40 in x 40 in ( 102 cm x 102 cm)

To increase or decrease the width of the blanket you need a multiple of 4 + 3 for the starting chain.

The chain at the beginning of each row counts as the first stitch.

Ch 67

Row 1: hdc in second ch from hook, hdc each ch across. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 2: hdc in each st across. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 3: hdc in 2nd stfptr around next sts two rows below, *hdc in next 2 stsfptr around next sts two rows below, repeat from * until 2 sts left, hdc in last 2 sts. Chain 2 and turn.

You’ll start to see the raised “bar” effect forming here.

Repeat Rows 2-3 for 48 rows or until desired length is reached, on final row ending with a row of half double crochet.

I usually stop when it feels close to the yarn running out or when I’m happy with the size—no need to overthink it.

Last row:
I like ending with a plain hdc row because it keeps the edge looking clean, but you can repeat the texture row if you want a more consistent look.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

After a while, the texture really stands out—especially in solid or denim-style colors. This is one of those blankets that looks simple at first, but people always assume it took longer than it actually did.
