Supplies

  • 1 – 5.3 oz (150 g) Lion Brand Mandala Baby Yarn in Narnia or any lightweight category #3 yarn 590 yd (540 m)
  • 1- 10.5 oz (300 g) Bernat Baby Sport Yarn in White or any lightweight category #3 yarn 1077 yd (984 m)
  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations – US Terms

  • st/sts – stitch
  • sl – slip stitch
  • ch – chain
  • dc– double crochet
  • hbdc- herringbone double crochet

special stitch -herringbone double crochet stitch- yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch. yo and pull back through the stitch and the next loop on the hook. yo pull through 1 loop on the hook, yo, pull through remaining two loops on the hook.

Herringbone Double Crochet Stitch

You can make a larger or smaller crocheted blanket by using a multiple of 2 + 3 for the chain. Chain stitches count as the first stitch of each row.

Size of blanket: 35 in x 42 in (89 cm x 107 cm)

Chain 113 in white

Row 1: hbdc in 4th ch from hook and in each chain across. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 2: hbdc in 2nd st and each chain across. Chain 1 and turn. Change to color

Row 3: *dc in 2nd st, sl in next*. Repeat ** across. Your last sl is worked in the top of turning ch 3. Ch 2 and turn. Change color to white. Don’t cut yarn. Carry yarn up the side.

Row 5: hbdc in 2nd st and each chain across. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 6: hbdc in 2nd st and each chain across. Chain 1 and turn. Change to color.

Repeat row 3-5 until you have 107 rows or until you have the length you want. Last 2 rows are herringbone double crochet.

Border

  1. Round 1: single crochet in each stitch around on the top and bottom. On the sides, space the single crochet stitches evenly. Put 2 single crochet stitches in each corner on either side. Slip stitch to the first stitch.
  2. Round 2: sc in each stitch around. Put 2 single crochet stitches in each corner on either side. Slip stitch to the first stitch.
  3. Round 3: * 1 sc, 3 ch, 1 sc, skip 2*. Repeat **
  4. Knot, cut end and weave ends with a tapestry needle.

Blanket Tips

  • You can either carry the white on the color row or you can switch colors right before you chain 1.
  • To carry the color row of the side, you switch to the white on the last stitch of the color row. Don’t cut the yarn.
  • When you have done 2 rows of the white pick up the color on the last stitch of the row.
  • You will have short piece of colored yarn going up the sides. You will crochet over it when you do the border.
  • If you don’t like the look of carrying the colored yarn, you can always fasten off at the end of each colored row.
