Granny square are a traditional way to crochet squares using double crochet and the chain stitch. There are tons of variation on the basic pattern.
The pattern is not hard to do but it is much easier if you see the pattern than just read it. There are several ways to start a granny square: magic circle, chain circle, or chain 3.
How to Make a Granny Square
Supplies
- yarn Red Heart Unforgettable in Stain Glass
- crochet hook 4 mm
- scissors
- tapestry or yarn needle
Step 1. Chain 3
Chain 3. Double crochet in the 3rd chain from the hook, twice. There are 2 double crochet stitches and 1 chain that counts as a cluster.
Chain 3.
Step 2. Three Double Crochet
3 double crochet in the same chain space as before. Chain 3.
Repeat “3 double crochet in the same chain space as before. Chain 3.” 2 more times.
Slip stitch to the first stitch of the round. Then slip stitch 3 more times in the next 2 stitches and chain space.
Step 3. Chain 3
Chain 3 from the last slip stitch that is in the chain space. 2 Double crochet in the chain space.
Chain 3. 3 double crochets in the chain space. This forms the corner.
Chain 3.
Step 4. Clusters
3 double crochet stitches in the next chain 3 space. Chain 3. 3 double crochet stitches in the same chain space.
The 3 double crochet stitches form a cluster.
Chain 3.
Step 5. Repeat
Repeat Step 4. 2 times.
Slip stitch to the first stitch of the round. 3 slip stitches, 2 in the next 2 stitches, 3rd in the chain space.
Chain 3. 2 double crochet stitches. Chain 3. Three double crochet stitches.
Chain 3. Three double crochet stitches.
Step 6.
Chain 3. Three double crochet stitches. Chain 3. Three double crochet stitches.
Chain 3. Three double crochet stitches.
Step 7.
Repeat Step 6. twice.
Then chain 3. Slip stitch to the first stitch of the round.
Step 8.
3 slip stitches, 2 in the next 2 stitches, 3rd in the chain space. Chain 3. 2 double crochet stitches.
Chain 3. 3 double crochet stitches. Chain 3.
Repeat sl st to next space. In corners work (3dc, ch 3, 3dc). In spaces on sides work 3dc. Work a ch 3 in between the dc clusters on the sides.
Do this until you have 4 rounds or the size you want. Then single crochet in each stitch and single for each chain in the chain space.
You can use less chains in between in double crochet than 3, like 2 or one to make your granny square tighter.
Written Granny Square Pattern
Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as 1st dc). In the loop work 2dc, ch-3, 3dc, ch-3, 3dc, ch-3, 3dc, ch-3, sl st to top of starting ch 3.
Round 2: Sl st to next space. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch-3, 3 dc (1st corner made), *ch-1, (3 dc, ch-3, 3dc) in next corner*, repeat * to * 2 more times. Ch 1. Join with a sl st to the top of the 1st ch.
Round 3: Sl st to next space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in space for corner, *ch1, 3 dc in next space, ch1, in next corner space work 3dc, ch 3, 3 dc*, repeat * to * twice, ch1, 3dc, ch1, join to top of starting ch3.
To work additional rounds, sl st to next space. In corners work (3dc, ch 3, 3dc). In spaces on sides work 3dc. Work a ch 3 in between the dc clusters on the sides.
You can make a blanket using the 5.5 in squares. You can get 10 squares from each skein.
