Mother’s Day Kids Gift Craft – Flower Market Bag
Supplies
- Sharpie markers
- Canvas tote bag – ironed flat
- Cardboard – same size as bag
- Rubbing Alcohol 70% or 90%
- Eye Dropper
- Duck Canvas
- Trash bag or plastic table cloth
- Iron
- plastic cup
Practice
Step 1.
Cover your work area with a trash bag or plastic table cloth. Cut your duck canvas into rectangles about 9 x 10 depending on the size of the canvas. Since it is for practice the exact size doesn’t matter.
Step 2.
Take a look at these examples and draw some of the patterns. Practice different patterns and color combinations. Squeeze alcohol in the center of the flower using the eye dropper.
Add more as you need to have the flower spread fully. If you are not happy with the combination you can add more lines. The thicker the lines the further the ink will spread.
To get the color to spread well you want to add some drops of alcohol in the center of the flower immediately after drawing the pattern.
If you wait, the color does spread as well. You can see that in the 2nd photo.
Step 3.
Using a green marker draw a line from the bottom of the circle down to the bottom edge. Add leaves next to the stem. Draw veins of the leaves.
Add alcohol by tracing the stem from the top to the bottom. Add to the center of the leaves. Outline the flowers, stems, and leaves with black marker.
Start with the flowers first. Try different patterns to create unique flowers. See examples.
Flower Market Bag How to
Step 4. Cardboard
After you have practiced, cut the piece of cardboard to fit the inside of the bag. You want it tight, so the fabric lays flat. The cardboard is so the marker doesn’t bleed to the other side.
Step 5. Plan
Before you start plan your flower layout. An odd number of flowers works well. Think about making larger and smaller flowers and how far they would spread.
Step 6.
Draw you flower patterns adding alcohol in the center. When you are finished, add the stems and leaves. Make sure the bag is mostly dry and add the black details making the petals and leaves. Let it dry.
For a Mother’s Day gift you could add hearts, your mom’s or nana’s name.
Step 7. Iron
Iron the bag thoroughly on cotton setting, no steam. The bag can be machine washed cold, dry flat or hand wash separately.
This would also work great on an apron.
