There are other bulky yarns that are great for blankets. Some of my favorite best yarn for bulky or super bulky blankets are Lion Brand Hue & Me Yarn (category #5 bulky), Premier Serenity Chunky (category #5 bulky), Caron Chunky Cakes (category #6 super bulky), Lion Brand Jiffy Yarn (category #5 bulky), and Lion Brand Basic Stitch Antimicrobial (category #5 bulky).

All of the yarn that don’t have natural fibers can be washed in the washing machine. If they have wool natural fibers they mostly need to hand washed or on cold and line dried.

Caron Chunky Cakes, Premier Serenity, Lion Brand Basic Stitch Antimicrobial, and Lion Brand Jiffy Yarn are all made out of not natural materials so if you have skin allergies these would be a great choice. They are usually made out of acrylic but not all.

If you are looking for lots of colors together Caron Chunky cakes is a good choice. The yarn is easy to work with and comes in many pretty color combinations.

How Many Skeins of Yarn for a Chunky Blanket

For Bernat Blanket Yarn, I usually use 8 skeins of 10.5 oz to make a throw that is approximately: 42 in x 74 in or for 5 skeins: size of blanket: 46 in x 56 in.

For Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick Yarn, I used 22 skeins for a 44 in x 64 in.

The simpler the stitch and using tall stitches like half double or double crochet will lower the amount of your you need. The more complicated stitch and dense stitch you use the more skeins you will need.

The best way to figure out how many you need is to do a 5 in square of the pattern and then measure how much yardage you used and divide it by the yardage of the skein. Then figure out how many 5 in squares would fit in the blanket you want to make.

Example if you would do a 20 in x 20 in blanket you would need 4 squares across and 4 squares down for a total of 16. You then figure out how many were in each skein and how many skeins you would need.

For this pattern you are doing alternating rows of half double crochet and slip stitches. There are 3 rows of each of the half double crochet and slip stitch.

On the half double crochet row you skip the slip stitch row and go back the the half double crochet row from before. This makes the slip stitch row turn out and show the top stitch texture.

This is followed by 9 rows of the rice stitch. Which is shown in Row 8. The alternating rows and the rice stitch is repeating twice.

Then, there is another group of the half double crochet and slip stitch. The middle is 16 rows of the rice stitch.

After the middle of the blanket you repeat the first side so it mirrors the beginning section.
