I love the taste of watermelon it reminds me of Summertime and the 4th of July. The sweet taste of the watermelon inspired us to do this plate watermelon kid craft.
This watermelon kid craft just needs a few supplies. It is a fun craft using a little finger painting.
Watermelon kid crafts are great for the letter W alphabet theme, fruit theme, and great for the summertime too. You can use this craft to introduce fractions, 1 whole, a half, and a quarter (1, 1/2, 1/4).
Pair with a book like The Watermelon Seed a book about a funny crocodile that is afraid of swallowing a watermelon seed.
I have gathered some fun watermelon crafts.

How to Make a Plate Watermelon Kid Craft
Supplies
- plate – my was a small Styrofoam plate
- paint – I used acrylic in kelly green, black, and honeysuckle pink
- safety scissors
- plastic to cover work area
- apron
- optional – ruler and paint brush
Step 1. Put a small amount of the pink paint in the center of the plate. Dip your finger in it and paint the center of the plate pink. Let dry.
Step 2. Put a little bit of paint on the raised edge of the plate. Paint the edge green the entire way around using your finger. Leave a little white space between the pink and the green. Let dry.
Step 3. Then dip the tip of your finger in the black and make small dots for the seeds on the pink part. Let dry.
If you are going to using the watermelon craft to show fractions, first talk about that you have 1 whole watermelon. Then cut the watermelon into 2 equal pieces. To get two equal pieces draw a line across the plate and then draw a second line perpendicular to the first line. For a 1/4 cut the half into two equal parts.
It is a good idea to introduce math concepts to young children. They need math sense, like being able to count. Understanding 4 is bigger than 1. That things are bigger and smaller (less than/ greater than). You can teach help you child by using math daily.
I use math daily with my toddler by counting things and making and pointing out pattern, like red stripe, blue stripe.
