Pink Bubbles Baby Blanket Pattern: Quick Simple Shell Stitch

I wanted this blanket to have texture without feeling complicated, and the simple shell stitch ended up being exactly what I was looking for. It has enough detail to keep it interesting, but once the repeat clicks, it’s easy to work on while relaxing at night.

My soft Pink Bubbles Shell Stitch Baby Blanket crochet pattern will be a great project to try using Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn Dappled.

Shell Crochet Stitch is a technique that only contains two crochet stitches, single and double crochet. It's an easy beginner crochet stitch that I love to use, so pretty but easy.

There is my basic instruction for making the classic simple crochet shell pattern! Like video tutorials, try this easy shell blanket tutorial I made for the pattern.

Try my easy crocheted shell blanket using super chunky Bernat Blanket Yarn. There is an easy video tutorial too.

Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn Dappled

I used the Ever After Pink color because I liked the softer mix of pink shades instead of one solid color. The gradual color changes help keep the blanket interesting without needing to weave in extra ends.

This yarn is a super bulky chenille yarn, so the blanket gets thick and cozy pretty quickly. It also makes this a nice project when you want something that feels substantial without taking forever to finish.

One thing I noticed with this yarn is that the stitches can feel a little hard to see during the first row or two, especially in lower light. After a few rows though, the shell pattern becomes much easier to recognize.

Looking for an alternative for Bernat Blanket Yarn?

  • Paintbox Yarns Chenille Super Bulky: UK brand but fits the profile (super bulky chenille) and might offer unique color choices.
  • Premier Basix Chenille Brights Yarn: A budget chenille yarn, slightly different perhaps in texture, but still good for a baby blanket if you’re fine with minor variations.

The pink crochet blanket pattern is a great beginner crochet project. This chunky pink ombre baby blanket works up fast too using Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn a super bulky weight 6 yarn.

I was looking for my next crochet project and wanted to make a soft pink crocheted baby blanket with using Bernat Blanket Yarn baby dappled.

The Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn Dappled is an extra soft chenille yarn in a pretty gradient.

I love the color of this Ever After Pink, a pretty pink ombre. It is a super bulky gauge 6 yarn so the pink crochet blanket will work up fast.

The soft super chunky yarn is great because you get lots colors without having to change colors.

The colors are mixed into each other for a soft gradient color change in this Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn Dappled.

How Much Yarn for a Shell Stitch Baby Blanket?

For this chunky shell stitch baby blanket, I used 62 for the chain. For a worsted weight yarn you would probably want to double that.

I used 2 skeins of 10.5 oz of Bernat Blanket Yarn for this crochet pattern.

For a worsted weight blanket, I would use at least double if not more.

How to Make a Soft Pink Bubbles Baby Blanket Pattern using Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn Dappled - Simple Shell Crochet Stitch

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner (double and single crochet)

Supplies

The main thing to watch for is where the shell stitches go:

  • the shells are worked into the single crochet stitches
  • and the single crochet stitches go into the center of the shells

Once you see that back-and-forth pattern, it becomes much easier to follow without constantly checking the instructions.

I usually find the starting chain and first row are the slowest part, and then the pattern becomes really repetitive in a good way.

Pink Bubbles Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern Instructions

Chain 62

Start a chain in multiples of 6. Then chain 2 more and turn. For the chain a multiple of 6 + 2. (I usually double-check my chain count with shell patterns because being off by a stitch can throw the repeat off later.)

Row 1: In the 2nd chain from your hook, sc. *Skip two chains, work 5 dc into the next chain space. Skip two chains again, one sc. into the next chain.

Repeat the instructions from the * to the end. Your last stitch will be a sc. into the final chain. Chain 3 and turn.

Row 2: In the top of the sc. you made from the row below, work 2 dc. (You just created a half shell) now look for the middle dc of the shell (the 3rd dc) and sc. Skip over the next 2 dc, find the sc. of the row below and work 5 dc.

Continue across working a sc. into the third dc, and a “shell” into the sc. Your last stitch will be a half shell (3 dc). Chain 1 and turn.

Row 3: 1 sc into the very next stitch, the last dc you made on the row below. Skip over the 2 dc and work 5 dc into the sc. End this row with a sc into the last stitch, chain 3 and turn.

Repeat Row 2-3 until you have 35 rows.

Knot, cut end and weave ends with a tapestry needle.

After the blanket is finished, the shell texture stands out even more, especially with the soft color changes in the yarn. It’s one of those patterns that looks more detailed than it actually is once you get into the rhythm.

American Standard Baby Blanket Sizes Crochet

  • Lovey: 14 in x 14 in – great for cuddling (35.56 cm)
  • Large Lovey: 20 in x 20 in – great for cuddling and covering a newborn in the car seat (50.8 cm)
  • Preemie Blanket: 18 in x 18 in (45.72 cm)
  • Receiving Blanket: 30 in x 30 in – a great size for a newborn (76.2 cm)
  • Baby Blanket: 29 in x 35 in – a great size for a new baby with room to grow (73.66 cm x 88.9 cm)
  • Swaddling Blanket: 40 in x 40 in- for wrapping a newborn up tight usually made of gauze or flannel (101.6 cm) but a lightweight yarn would work
  • Crib: 45 in x 60 in (114.3 cm x 152.4 cm) - a great blanket size for growing into, toddlers, or a throw for older children

Of course, these sizes are just standard blanket sizes and you wan make them to fix your needs and size. My size choice also depends on how much yarn I have left and the repeat of the pattern.

I hope this helps you decide what size of baby blanket to crochet.
