I also made a black tail for her Halloween custom to go with the cat ear crochet hat beanie and attached it to a belt so she could easily take it on and off.

The rest of her costume was a black shirt and black leggings that were inexpensive. She already have the leggings.

Abbreviations – US Terms

  • yo – yarn over
  • sl – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet

You can make a larger or smaller crocheted even moss stitch project or a blanket by using an even number for the chain.

This hat is made using a rectangle. The side is sewn up after you have finished the ribbing and the main part of the hat.

To make this hat for an adult you want to increase the rows of ribbing until it is 1 in less than the distance around your head.

You want to increase the the height of the hat until it fits your head and you have room to sew the top seam together to make the ears. 8 – 8 1/2 in for a medium adult women.

Ribbing

Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each across. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2: scbl in the 2nd st and in each stitch across. Finish 1 sc in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn.

Do 70 rows or the width needed for the brim of the hat.

Main part of the hat

Single crochet evenly around the brim of the hat. You want an even number of stitches. I put about 1 single crochet for each row.

Row 2: sl in the 1st stitch, then hdc in the next, alternating slhdc until the end of the row always end with sl. Chain 1, turn. (sl is always on top of the sl and hdc in always on top of hdc)

Repeat Row 3 until you have 28 rows or the height you want for your hat. Cut yarn and knot leaving a long tail.

Finishing the Cat Ear Beanie Crochet Pattern

Fold in half and sew up the side seam using yarn and a tapestry needle. Match top seams together and sew.

Cut yarn leaving a long tail to sew shut the top of the hat. Knot stitch and match edges of the top of the hat together and sew both sides of the hat using a tapestry needle.

Fold the pointed parts of the corner (the ears) of the top of the hat. Put a few stitches at the bottom of the ear to give it more shape.

Cut and knot all ends and weave in yarn.

Chain 80 Slip stitch to the first stitch of the chain, making sure not to twist it.

Round 1: sl in the 1st st. In the next stitch hdcsl in the next stitch, repeat until the end of the row ending with a sl. Chain 1, turn.

Round 2: sl in the 1st stitch, then hdc in the next, alternating slhdc until the end of the row always end with sl. Chain 1, turn. (sl is always on top of the sl and hdc in always on top of hdc)

Repeat Round 2 until you have 21 rows or the height you want for your cowl. Cut yarn weave in ends.

Finishing of Cowl

Using pink thread or yarn find the center of the cowl and go 6 rows down. Sew a pink nose using the needle and thread.

I did 5 stitches about 3/4 in across in the sixth row in the center. Then I found the middle of my lines and sewed around 1/2 -3/4 in from the bottom of the line to the center of point for the nose.

I repeated the line from the horizontal to the point of the nose 8-10 times. Make sure to knot and secure both ends of your thread.

With the gray thread or yarn, make whiskers that go out from the nose. I used 3 back stitches for each whisker.

Go out about a ½ – 1 in from the nose and pull your needle through then go back to where you started for the back stitch. Repeat 3 times total for each whisker.

I did 3 whiskers on each side of the nose for a total of 6 whiskers. The top and bottom ones at an angle with the center one being straighter.

Cut and knot all thread and yarn. Weave in ends.
