How to Make a Free Woven Bulky Hat Crochet Pattern
Supplies
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- 1- Colorama O’Go Skein of Yarn in Salt an Pepper or any bulky gauge 5 yarn 228 yds (180 g)
- J/10 5.75 mm crochet hook
- 4 in faux fur pom pom in cloud
Abbreviations – US Terms
- ch/chs – chain/chains
- st/sts – stitch/stitches
- dc – double crochet stitch
- hdc– half double crochet stitch
- fpdc – front post double crochet stitch
- bpdc -back post double crochet stitch
- scbl – single crochet stitch in the back loop
front and back post double crochet: instead of going through both loops like normal you go around the post either from the front or the back. You then complete the double crochet like normal.
single crochet back loop: instead of going through both loops on the top of the stitch like normal, you only go through the back. The loop that is at the back.
To make the a larger or smaller bulky crochet hat pattern, use an odd multiple of 3+2.
This pattern is 3 back post double crochet then 3 front post double crochet stitches.
Change colors ever row after the ribbed section.

Ribbed Section
ch 10
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each across. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 2: scbl in each st and in each across ending with 1 sc in last st. Chain 1 and turn.
Repeat row 2 until you have 60 rows. Cut yarn and knot.
Main Part of Hat
Change to the 2nd color. Pull up a stitch at one end. Chain 3.
Row 1: double crochet in each row evenly (60sts) Chain 2 and turn.
Row 2: bpdc in the 2nd st and the follow 2 sts. *Then fpdc in the next 3 sts. bpdc in the next 3*. Repeat ** ending with 2 bpdc and 1 hdc. Chain 2 and turn.
Row 3: fpdc in the 2nd st and the follow 2 sts. *Then bpdc in the next 3 sts. fpdc in the next 3*. Repeat ** ending with 2 fpdc and 1 hdc. Chain 2 and turn.
Repeat Row 2-3 until you have rows or the height you want.
Finishing Hat
Cut and knot yarn. Fold in half horizontally with wrong sides together. Slip stitch or whip stitch the hat together.
Take a long piece of yarn and make a gathering stitch at the top of the hat. Put gather until it will not gather any more. Knot yarn and weave in ends. Sew any openings at the top of the hat that are left.
Weave in ends. Attach the pom pom to the top using the loop on the bottom of the pom pom and matching yarn.
Change colors every other row after the ribbed section.
