Using the same yarn I did to make a chunky ear warmer and cowl, I decided to make a twisted lines free chunky hat crochet hat to match.
This crochet chunky hat pattern is made using Lion Brand Roving Tweed in Grey. This yarn has a roving texture and is gauge 5 so it works up quickly.
Crocheted chunky hats are great. They keep your head warm and work up fast. This is a cushy soft hat with great texture.
This crochet pattern works up fast using the mini cable stitch. I made a crocheted dishcloth, Mini Cable Stitch Dishcloth, that you can try out the crochet stitch with.
You can make this crochet pattern in no time. There are lots of pretty colors of yarn available.
This crochet pattern is easy and with a simple repeat. After you have mastered the single crochet together stitch, this hat will be a quick crochet project.

How to Make a Chunky Hat Crochet Pattern: Bulky Yarn
Size: Adult women approx. 9.5 in x 10 in (24 cm x 25 cm)
Abbreviations – US Terms
- ch/chs – chain/chains
- st/sts – stitch/stitches
- sk – skip
- dc – double crochet stitch
- bpdc – back post double crochet stitch
- fptr – front post triple crochet stitch
To make a larger or smaller project, use a multiple of 5. The chain 3 counts as the first double crochet.
Ch 46 loosely or use the next size up hook
Row 1: hdc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. Chain 2 and turn.
Row 2: hdc in the 2nd st and in each stitch across. Chain 2 and turn.
Row 3: dc in the 2nd st. sk 1 st and trfp in next. go back and trfp in sk st. dc in the next 3 st. repeat when there are 3 stitch left sk 1 st and trfp in next. go back and trfp in sk st. dc in the turning chain. chain 2 and turn.
Row 4: bpdc in the next 2 st. dc in the next 3 sts. bpdc in the next 2 st. repeat until you have 4 sts left. sk 1 st and trfp in next. go back and trfp in sk st. dc in the last 2 sts. chain 2 and turn.
Repeat rows 3-4 until you have 12 rows. End with two rows of hdc for a total of 14 rows.
Fold hat in half and slip or whip stitch up the side.
Do a gathering stitch in the top row of the hat. Pull both sides of the yarn until you cannot pull it tighter. Knot the ends and weave in making sure to close up any holes left after gather.
