The colors are perfect for a little boy. The yarn is a bulky gauge 6 yarn so the blanket will work up fast.
The self striping chunky chenille yarn is great because you get lots colors without having to change colors. There are less ends to weave in.

You can make a larger or smaller blanket by using an odd number +3 for the chain.
The chain 3 counts as the 1st double crochet for the row. You will have two double crochet stitches at the beginning and end of each row.

Row 1: dc in the 3 chain from hook. sc, Repeat dc, sc to the end. End with a dc. Chain 3, turn.
Row 2: dc, sc repeat to the end. End with a dc. Chain 3, turn.
Repeat row 2 until you have used both cakes of yarn. Finish with a complete row of the last color.
