Leaf Ripple Crochet Blanket Pattern - Cozy Velvet Yarn

Looking for a pretty ripple throw afghan? A crocheted throw that is soft and squishy but not too hard to make? This free classic velvet leaf ripple crochet blanket pattern will be a great crochet project to try.

This free ripple crochet pattern only has two stitches: half double and half double crochet together.

The crochet pattern of the classic ripple stitch is a one row repeat.

I was looking for my next crochet project and wanted to make a blanket with Bernat Velvet Yarn and use the ripple stitch like this crochet dishtowel pattern I made.

I love the softest of the yarn it is even softer than Bernat Blanket Yarn.

The Bernat Velvet Yarn is a bulky weight 5 yarn. It is a little difficult to use. If you do not keep your tension tight and even, it will pull out or what is called worming.

I would suggest you practice a swatch of half double crochets until you have a feel for the yarn and make sure to keep your tension tight.

My favorite color green was my choice for this blanket. I love the soft colors available.

The lighter color looks gray but is really a green gray. You cannot really tell in person. It could be a light gray.

This free crochet blanket pattern is a classic version of the chevron blanket crochet pattern. It is a great wavy version of the crochet ripple blanket pattern.

Tips for Velvet Yarn

You will want to make the yarn into balls. The first skein of yarn was in 4 parts and got all tangled. It took forever to untangle it all. Also, the yarn is tied together with tiny knots so if the skein has come apart you can tie a tight tiny knot.

Practice first using a tight tension. When you change colors tie the color you are ending in a knot. The yarn tends to unravel itself.

Bernat Velvet Yarn Tips & Tricks for Crochet Blankets

Bernat Velvet Yarn is incredibly soft and plush, making it perfect for cozy crochet blankets — but it does take a little extra care to get the best results. Here are some helpful tips for working with this luxurious yarn:

1. Choose the right hook size.
Use a larger hook (around 6 mm–7 mm) to keep your stitches loose and let the velvet texture shine. Tight stitches can make the yarn lose its fluffy look and feel.

2. Avoid frogging (ripping out).
Velvet yarn doesn’t like being undone — it can snag and shed easily. Check your stitch count often so you can catch any mistakes early before you have to rip back.

3. Secure your ends carefully.
Because velvet yarn is so smooth, woven-in ends can slip out over time. Try knotting your yarn securely and hiding the tails inside the blanket stitches or along the border.

4. Add a sturdy border.
A simple single crochet or half double crochet border around your blanket helps stabilize the edges and prevents the fabric from stretching out with use.

5. Handle and wash gently.
Machine wash your velvet blanket on a gentle cycle or hand wash it to keep the yarn plush. Always lay flat to dry — heat can damage the soft pile.

6. Store loosely.
Fold or roll your blanket gently rather than pressing it down tightly. This keeps the velvet fibers full and prevents flattening.

With a few extra steps, you’ll have a Bernat Velvet blanket that stays beautiful, soft, and cozy for years to come!
