I saw this beautiful yarn and immediately wanted to make a chunky hat with it. I purchased several different colors of this pretty yarn to make this free chunky crochet hat pattern.
This crochet chunky hat pattern is made using Malabrigo Rasta Yarn in Archangel and Porrinho. This yarn has a roving like texture and is gauge 6 so it works up extra quickly.
Crocheted chunky hats are great. They keep your head warm and work up fast. This is a cushy soft hat with great texture.

The Berry Stitch
This crochet pattern works up fast using the berry stitch. I made a crocheted dishcloth, Berry Stitch Washcloth, that you can try out the crochet stitch with.
You can make this crochet pattern in no time. There are lots of pretty colors of yarn available.
This crochet pattern is easy and with a simple repeat. After you have mastered the berry stitch, this hat will be a quick crochet project.
The Yarn
I used Malabrigo Rasta Yarn in Archangel & Porrinho to make this pretty super bulky hat crocheting pattern. This yarn is 100% Merino Wool.
This yarn is a slightly felted yarn with a single twisted made it Peru. It comes in many beautiful colors.
You will need to hand wash your hat in cold water and dry flat.

Chunky Crochet Beanie Free Pattern How to
Supplies
- 1 – skein of Malabrigo Rasta Yarn in Archangel 90 yd (82 m)
- 1 – skein of Malabrigo Rasta Yarn in Porrinho 90 yd (82 m) (I used half of the skein)
- K – 6.5 mm crochet hook
- scissors

Abbreviations – US Terms
- yo – yarn over
- sl st– slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet stitch
- scbl – back loop single crochet stitch
- ch – chain
- bc – berry stitch
special stitch – berry crochet – yo insert your hook into the space, yo, pull through, yo, and pull through 1 loop on the hook. Then, yo, insert your hook into the same designated space again, yo, pull through, yo, and pull through all 5 loops on the hook. chain 1.
You can make a larger or smaller hat by adding more chains with an even number or rows of ribbing or increase the height by adding more rows of hdc.

Chunky Free Crochet Hat Beanie Pattern
Ribbing
Chain 7 (Leave a long tail to seam up the ribbed section)
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and across. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 2: *scbl in the 2nd st and across, Chain 1 and turn.
Repeat Row 2 until you have 45 rows. Use the long tail from when you started, to seam the short side together.
Hat
Starting where you stopped for the ribbing. chain 1 and single crochet at the end of each row. You want 45 stitches or an odd number.
Round 2: In 2nd st, –* berry crochet – yo insert your hook into the space, yo, pull through, yo, and pull through 1 loop on the hook. Then, yo, insert your hook into the same designated space again, yo, pull through, yo, and pull through all 5 loops on the hook. chain 1. sl in next st.* Repeat from** ending with last sl worked on turning chain. Chain 1.
Round 3: In 2nd st, *sl in next bc, 1 sc into next sl*. Repeat from ** to end. Chain 1.
Round 4: In 2nd st, sl into next sl, *1 bc into next sc, sl into next sl*. Repeat from ** to last st, sl in last st. Chain 1.
Round 5: Skip 1st st, *sc into next sl, sl into next bc*. Repeat from ** to end. Chain 1.
Repeat Rounds 2-5 until you have ten rounds. Chain 2.
Round 12-14: hdc in 2nd stitch and round. Chain 2.
Cut and knot yarn leaving a long tail to gather the top of the hat. Using a gather stitch on the top row gather the top of the hat together.
After you have gathered the top of the hat, sew close any of the holes left over. Weave all ends in.
