Easy Chunky Crochet Scarf Pattern – Free Barcelona Scarf

Looking for an easy chunky crochet scarf pattern that works up quickly? The Barcelona Scarf is a cozy bulky yarn scarf with a simple raised texture created with double crochet and front post double crochet stitches.

This free crochet scarf pattern uses #5 bulky yarn, so it grows much faster than a scarf made with worsted weight yarn. The repeating stitch pattern is easy to get into a rhythm with, making this a great project for relaxing on the couch while crocheting.

The finished scarf measures approximately 7 ½ inches wide by 68 inches long, which gives you plenty of length to wrap it around your neck while still keeping the scarf comfortable and easy to wear.

I love the multi-colored yarn. This yarn has two color of yarn twisted together. I like the red and gray colors and think it will go great with my black winter coat adding a bit of color to a dreary winter day.

Easy Bulky Yarn Crochet Scarf

One of my favorite things about this scarf is the texture. Front post double crochet stitches create raised vertical lines throughout the scarf without requiring a complicated stitch pattern.

The multicolored bulky yarn adds even more interest. The original Barcelona Big yarn has two colors twisted together, which creates a pretty blended effect without having to change yarn colors.

I used the Tapestry color with shades of red and gray. It adds a little color while still being neutral enough to wear with a winter coat.

This scarf would also make a great handmade Christmas gift. Choose a neutral gray, cream, brown or navy for a classic look, or use a colorful bulky yarn for something brighter.

How to Make a Chunky Free Scarf Crochet Pattern

Skill Level: Easy / Advanced Beginner

Finished Size: Approximately 7 ½ in. × 68 in.
(19 cm × 173 cm)

Yarn Weight: #5 Bulky

Yarn Needed: Approximately 410 yards

Crochet Hook: K-10.5 / 6.5 mm

The pattern is written using US crochet terms.

Supplies

• Scissors
• tapestry needle
• K 10 ½, 6.5 mm
• 1- Barcelona Big! Loops & Thread Yarn 8.8 oz, 410 yd (375 m/250g) Tapestry or any gauge 5 bulky yarn.

You do not need to use the exact yarn I used to make this scarf.

Look for a #5 bulky weight yarn with approximately 400–425 yards available. Because yarn thickness can vary between brands, check your gauge and adjust your hook size if necessary.

A solid-colored yarn will show off the raised stitch texture particularly well, while a variegated or self-striping yarn will give the scarf more color without requiring yarn changes.

Abbreviations – US Terms

• yo- yarn over
• fpdc– front post double crochet
• dc– double crochet

front post double crochet stitch – yarn over, insert the hook behind the post from the front, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru 2 loops on your hook, yo, pull thru remaining two loops on your hook. For more info here, from yarnspirations.com.

To make the scarf wider increase the chain by an odd number

Turning chain counts as first double crochet in each row.

Gauge: 14 double wide x 6 rows in approx. 4 in x 4 in (10 cm)

Gauge is not as critical for a scarf as it is for fitted crochet projects, but your gauge will affect the finished size and the amount of yarn you need.

Approx. 7 ½ in x 68 in (19 cm x 173 cm)

Chain: 26

Row 1: Dc in the 4th chain from the hook. Dc in the next chain, *fpdc in the next chain. Dc in the next 2 chains*. Repeat** until the end or the row. Your last stitch will be a dc. Chain 3 and turn.

Row 2: Row 2: Turning chain counts as first dc. Dc in the 2nd stitch, *fpdc in the next chain. Dc in the next 2 chains*. Repeat** until the end or the row. Your last stitch will be a dc. Chain 3 and turn.

Repeat row 2 until you have 106 rows or you run out of yarn ending on a complete row of the same color. Cut ends and weave in ends.

How to Make the Scarf Wider or Narrower

The original scarf is approximately 7 ½ inches wide.

To change the width, adjust the beginning chain while keeping the stitch repeat in mind. Add or remove chains in multiples of 3 so the textured stitch pattern continues correctly.

You can also make the scarf longer or shorter simply by working more or fewer rows.

Can Beginners Make This Chunky Crochet Scarf?

This pattern is a good choice for an advanced beginner who already knows how to chain and double crochet.

If you have never made a post stitch before, this scarf is a good project for practicing front post double crochet because the same stitch sequence repeats throughout the scarf.

Once you have completed a few rows, the pattern becomes easy to recognize.

How Much Yarn Do I Need for a Chunky Crochet Scarf?

I used approximately 410 yards of #5 bulky yarn for my scarf.

If you substitute another yarn, having around 425 yards available gives you a little extra room for differences in gauge.

Making your scarf wider or longer will require additional yarn.

What Size Should a Crochet Scarf Be?

My finished Barcelona Scarf measures approximately 7 ½ inches wide and 68 inches long.

You can easily customize those measurements. Add more rows for a longer scarf or stop earlier for a shorter scarf.

For a wider, oversized scarf, increase the starting chain while maintaining the stitch repeat.

Why Bulky Yarn Works Well for Scarves

Bulky yarn is one of my favorite choices for winter scarves because it produces a warm fabric without requiring hundreds of rows.

It also makes the stitch definition easier to see. The raised front post stitches in this pattern stand out nicely against the regular double crochet stitches.

That combination makes this a relatively simple crochet scarf that still has plenty of texture.
