Looking for a free cotton dishcloth pattern to try? This bean stitch crochet dishcloth pattern is a great project to try. The crochet pattern uses the bean crochet stitch and the single crochet stitch.
You can use as a square crocheted dishcloth as a cleaning cloth, dish towel, or wash cloth. They work great and are durable.
This crochet stitch makes a woven looking reversible diagonal textured pattern. The crochet pattern is a simple repeat, great for watching TV and crocheting.
This crochet stitch does takes longer than some stitches. The bean stitch also takes more yarn than most stitches.

- scissors
- tapestry needle
- H/8 5 mm crochet hook
- 1 – 3 oz Lily Sugar n Cream in Coral Seas Ombre any other worsted weight cotton yarn
Bean Stitch Crochet Pattern
Abbreviations – US Terms
- yo – yarn over
- ch– chain
- sc – single crochet
- st– stitch
Special Stitch – Bean Stitch – Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over in same stitch and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over in same stitch once more and pull up a loop (6 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on hook, chain 1 to complete stitch. Every bean stitch is finished with a chain 1.
Tips for Dishcloth Pattern
- You can make a larger or smaller crochet dishcloth or a blanket by using an even number for the chain.
- The cotton yarn is easy to split so you have to be careful when you pull up a loop.
- When you yarn over and pull up a loop for the stitch make them all the same height.
- Make sure to count your stitches for the row to make sure you are not missing any stitches.

Row 1: Single crochet in the 2nd chain from hook. Single Crochet in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 2: Single crochet in first stitch, *skip next stitch, bean stitch in next stitch; rep from * until 2 stitches left, skip next stitch, single crochet in last stitch. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 3: single crochet in first stitch, bean stitch in chain-1 space of each bean stitch across, single crochet in last single crochet. Chain 1 and turn.
Repeat Row 3 until you have 25 rows or until the dishcloth is square. The last row is single crochet, one single crochet in each stitch across. Cut yarn and know. Weave in all ends.
