In this crochet seed stitch tutorial, there is written instructions including a free PDF pattern of a dishcloth. You can find step by step direction
This stitch uses the the slip stitch in the back loop only and the single crochet stitch in an alternating pattern. The pattern makes a textured that looks similar to a knit stitch.
This stitch works for lots of crochet projects. You can made dishcloths, scarves, cowls, ear warmers, and a blanket using it.
The skills you need are the chain stitch, single crochet, and the slip stitch in the back loop only. This stitch is easy but not fast since it gains less than a single crochet height each row. The stitch makes a dense fabric.

Seed Stitch Crochet Tips
- For the chain you need an odd number
- You do 1 slip stitch in the back loop, 1 single crochet and alternate
- The row always starts with 1 slip stitch in the same space as the chain 1 you just did. The row always ends with a single crochet.
- The chain 1 does not count as the first stitch of the row.
- The back loop means going through just the loop furthest away from you instead of going through both of the loops like usual.

Row 1: In the 2nd chain from the hook, * slip stitch, single crochet, repeat from * across to the end of the chain. End with 1 single crochet. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 2: * slip stitch in the back loop only, single crochet, repeat from * across the row. End with 1 single crochet. Chain 1 and turn.
Repeat Row 2 until you have 41 rows or the length you want.
To make a potholder or trivet make another one the same size. Then sew them together around all 4 sides.
You can also make a wider square. Chain 68 and fold it in half and sew the 3 sides.
Another alternative is using 2 strand of yarn at the same time. I haven’t done this with a potholder. I am not certain it would be thick enough to be a good potholder.
