I love using new and different crochet stitches. The basketweave is a common pattern that I had not tried yet.
You can change the pattern to has more or less rows or stitches to increase the size of your basketweave. There are quite a few variations of this basket weave crochet stitch pattern.

Learn the Basketweave Stitch- Easy Washcloth Crochet Pattern
Supplies
- scissors
- tapestry needle
- H – 5 mm crochet hook
- 1 – 3 oz Lily Sugar n Cream in Coral Seas Ombre any other worsted weight cotton yarn approx 143 yds
- 1 – 4 oz Lily Sugar n Cream in Teal any other worsted weight cotton yarn approx 190 yds
The starting chain for the basketweave stitch crochet pattern is a multiple of 8 plus 1.
The chain 3 counts as the first stitch of each row.
Written Basketweave Stitch Pattern
Abbreviations US
- ch– chain
- dc– double crochet stich
- bpdc – back post double crochet stitch
- fpdc – front post double crochet stitch
- st– stitch
front and back post double crochet: instead of going through both loops like normal you go around the post either from the front or the back. You then complete the double crochet like normal.

Row 1: In the 5th ch from the hook dc and in each ch across. Chain 3 and turn.
Row 2: fpdc in the 2nd st and the next 3 sts. *bpdc in the next 4 sts. fpdc* in the next 4 sts. Repeat ** until you have 1 st left, do 1 dc. Chain 3 and turn.
Row 3-4: bpdc in the 2nd st and the next 3 sts. *fpdc in the next 4 sts. bpdc* in the next 4 sts. Repeat ** until you have 1 st left, do 1 dc. Chain 3 and turn.
Row 5-6: fpdc in the 2nd st and the next 3 sts. *bpdc in the next 4 sts. fpdc* in the next 4 sts. Repeat ** until you have 1 st left, do 1 dc. Chain 3 and turn.
Repeat rows 3-6 until you have 16 rows or the length you want. Cut yarn and knot. Weave in ends.
Step by Step Basketweave Written Crochet Pattern
- 1. chain 33 (a multiple of 8 +1)
- 2. double crochet in the 5th stitch from the hook and in each chain for the entire row. Chain 3 and turn.
- 3. front post double crochet in the 2nd stitch and the next 3 stitches. (Back post double crochet in the next stitches. Front post double crochet in the next 4 stitches). Repeat the steps in the () until you have 1 stitch left. Double crochet in the last stitch. Do this twice.
- 4. back post double crochet in the 2nd stitch and the next 3 stitches. (Front post double crochet in the next stitches. Back post double crochet in the next 4 stitches). Repeat the steps in the () until you have 1 stitch left. Double crochet in the last stitch. Do this twice.
- 5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you have 16 rows or the length you want.
Tips
- you have groups of 4 front or back post double crochet stitches repeated twice to make a square.
- The only difference between front and back post double crochet is you insert your hook from the front of the stitch around the post and back to the front. The back post you insert your hook from the back around the post to the back.
