I chose Lion Brand Hometown Yarn for these fall pumpkin crocheting patterns.

The yarn comes in lots of colors and is easily available. I found these 3 color at my local store. Working with the yarn is easy so it makes a great choice for a how to.

You could use any other super bulky gauge 6 yarn too. If you choose a different gauge your pumpkins would still work but would be smaller unless you increase the being chain.

How to Crochet a Chunky Pumpkin Using a Rectangle

Abbreviations – US Term

  • ch – chain
  • yo – yarn over
  • sl – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • scbl – single crochet in the back loop

You can easy make a larger or small pumpkin by increasing or decreasing the number of the starting chain using an odd number and the number of rows.

Small Yellow Spider Stitch Pumpkin Crochet Pattern

Ch 33

Row 1: 3rd chain from the hook, work one sc, one ch, one sc, then skip one ch, and work the spider again. (scchsc). Continue across the whole row. You should have one extra chain at the end. Work a sc into that stitch. ch 2 and turn.

ROW 2: Skip over the first two stitches and find that ch space. You’ll want to work your scchsc into that stitch. Continue across the row until the last stitch will be sc. Chain 2, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until you have 8 rows or the height you want.

Cut yarn and knot. Leave a long yarn tail to gather the long side.

How to Finish the Crochet Pumpkin

Fold the rectangle horizontally and slip or whip stitch the short ends together.

Then using a tapestry need and gather the top and bottom. Put the two ends of the piece yarn until you have closed the circle on one end.

Next, stuff the pumpkin with some fiberfill.

Make a stem out of the hemp yarn by wrapping the yarn around 4 fingers about 15 times. Then wrap the opposite direction towards one half. Cut and tie the yarn.

You can use a stick from outside or a cinnamon stick too. Another idea is to crochet a stem using yarn. I have the pattern below the 3rd pumpkin.

Insert stem in the open side and put the two ends of the yarn used to gather. Tie the two ends together when the pumpkin is gathered enough.
