Learn How to Do the Shell Crochet Stitch Tutorial – Step by Step
I am using Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton Yarn for this written photo tutorial. The crochet hook I chose was a F/3.75 mm.
Step 1.
To crochet the shell stitch you need a chain a multiple of 6 + 2. Example (6 x 4) + 2 = 26 chains.
Step 2.
Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. I like to do a row of single crochet stitches for the first row.
You can start without the single crochet and crochet in the 2nd chain and then do Step 3. instead.
Step 3. Shell Stitch How to
Next, Chain 1 and turn. Skip 2 stitches, then 5 double crochet. Then skip 2, 1 single crochet. Repeat *Skip 2, 5 double crochet. Skip 2, 1 single crochet.* Repeat ** until the end of the row. The last stitch will be a single crochet.
Step 4.
Then, chain 3. 2 double crochet in the same stitch as the chain. This is half of a shell stitch. Then, single crochet in the 3rd or middle double crochet stitch from the row below.
5 Double crochet stitches in the next single stitch.
Repeat single crochet in the 3rd double crochet stitch and 5 Double crochet stitches in the next single crochet stitch. The last stitch is 3 double crochet stitches in the same stitch. This forms the a half of a shell stitch.
Step 5.
Turn and chain 1. 5 double crochet in the next single crochet stitch from the row before. 1 single crochet in the center or 3rd double crochet from the row before. Repeat 5 double crochet, 1 single crochet with a single crochet being the last stitch.
Now, repeat steps 5-6 until you have the length you want.
