Crochet Poncho Patterns to Try
No matter what your skill level, there is sure to be a poncho crochet pattern that will inspire you to create your very own one-of-a-kind piece.
There are various types of crochet ponchos that you can create, each with its unique style and purpose. One type of poncho is the classic poncho, which has a simple rectangular shape that can be worn without any closures.
Another type is the pullover poncho, which is similar to a sweater, but with a wider neckline that can be worn off the shoulders. The circular poncho is circular in shape and can be made with a lace or mesh design for a delicate look.
The asymmetric poncho is a more modern and edgy design with an irregular shape, which can add an interesting and artistic touch to your outfit. Finally, there are hooded ponchos, which can either be pullovers or have a specific pattern for the hood.
These are perfect for keeping you warm and snug during chilly weather. Whatever your style and needs, there is sure to be a poncho crochet pattern that can suit your preferences.
Types of Crochet Stitches for Ponchos
There are numerous types of stitches that can be used when creating poncho crochet patterns. For beginners, the single crochet stitch or double crochet stitch are simple and easy to learn.
More advanced patterns may use intricate stitch designs such as the popcorn stitch or the shell stitch to create texture and depth in the fabric.
The crocodile stitch, which resembles a crocodile scale, is another more advanced stitch that can add a unique look to your poncho. Tunisian crochet is another technique that can be used for poncho crochet patterns, particularly for the circular poncho style.
The Tunisian simple stitch and Tunisian knit stitch are the most commonly used Tunisian stitches for making ponchos. As you gain experience, you can experiment with different stitch combinations and techniques to add your personal touch to your poncho crochet designs.
Crochet Patterns for Ponchos
1. Chunky Hooded Poncho Pattern
Very happy with my poncho. Pattern was very easy to understand and worked up quickly. I used 4 balls of weight (3) merino of 150g/410yds/375m each (3 grey and 1 black) with a 6mm hook. I also added extra rows of the ribbing at the bottom until I ran out of yarn.
The YouTube link attached was super helpful for starting the poncho, then the pattern was super easy to follow. The hood came out super well, and I personally made mine a bit shorter, just because of preference.
All in all, super easy to make (this was my first piece of clothing I’ve made) and the instructions were very clear and easy to follow 🙂
2. Boho Fringed Crochet Pattern for Poncho
Such an awesome pattern! I made this up a couple weeks ago for a friend – i forgot to take pictures! Easy to follow and easily modified to fit someone who is larger than the pattern is intended for!
This pattern is easy to read and makes a beautiful poncho! The photo is before I finished off the neck and added the fringe but it came out awesome and was the first large piece I’ve ever made! If I can do it anyone can!
3. Cozy Cowl Crocheted Poncho Pattern
pattern was easy to follow and it turned out as hoped! I changed the neckline a bit to resemble rest of shawl. Also, was trying to block the two rectangles and “killed the yarn”. I loved the results! Why am I just learning this???
I’ve done another poncho by the same designer and my daughter and I love them. The directions are easy to read and they are good even for a beginner to accomplish. She’s had 2 babies in a year and 1/2 and these are comfy for her. The product met my expectations and so much so I gladly paid for a 2nd pattern.
4. Park City Crochet Poncho Pattern
This poncho is adorable. I used Vanna’s Choice Linen. The pattern was very detailed and super easy to follow. The girl I made it for chose to wear it as a boxy poncho but did not want the sides joined.
Beautiful pattern and end result is lovely. Written well with plenty of detail I did switch the pattern and changed it to a v stitch instead and also added a fbdc& bpdc for an added edging which I liked as an extra touch
5. Easy Weekend Poncho Pattern
A beautiful poncho… Instructions to match! Instructions were easy to follow and the poncho came out just great!! Didn’t take that long to make either!
Beautiful pattern! So easy to follow! I used this pattern for a custom order and my customer absolutely loved the fit of this poncho!
6. Rolled Neck Poncho Pattern – Child – Adult Sizes
Easy to follow pattern. I made it in pink, collar and edging in red.
this so darling. love the pattern of the shawl and perfect for a child…am so satisfied
