Berry Stitch Crochet Pattern Tutorial: Free Quick Pattern

I am sharing how to do the berry crochet stitch with this easy tutorial. There is a free ear warmer pattern using same stitch too.

The berry stitch makes a nice raised berry or raised square depending if you finish it with a chain stitch. In this example, I will be doing the uneven berry stitch that makes a more round raised design.

I love the texture of the stitch. The stitch pattern is a repeat of 4 rows but 2 pairs of the rows are similar.

There is a berry stitch video that is left-handed. I also included a link to a right-handed berry stitch video tutorial.

After you have mastered the berry stitch try some of these free crochet patterns. Some used the even berry stitch which is more of a square design.

How to do the Uneven Berry Stitch Crochet Tutorial

Notes:

  • You need an even number for your foundation chain.
  • The turning chain counts as the first stitch of each row.
  • You will alternate on the berry stitch row a slip stitch then a berry stitch.
  • Between the berry stitch rows will be a row of alternating single crochet and slip stitches. The slip stitch will always be on top of the chain 1 of the berry stitch. The single crochet will always be on top of the slip stitch from the previous row.

Step 1.

Chain an even number for the foundation chain.

Step 2.

In the second chain from the hook, single crochet in each chain for the entire chain. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Step 3.

The berry stitch: Yarn over and insert hook into the space. Yarn over, pull through, yarn over, and pull through 1 loop on the hook.

Then, yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch space again, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, and pull through all 5 loops on the hook. Chain 1.

Second Row: berry stitch in the second stitch of the row (skipping the turning chain the 1st stitch). Slip stitch in the next stitch. Repeat “berry stitch, slip stitch” until you reach the end of the row. The last stitch will be a slip stitch. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Step 4.

Third Row: In the 2nd stitch of the row, slip stitch on top of the berry stitch (put the slip stitch in the chain stitch of the berry). Single crochet in the slip stitch from the row previous.

Repeat “slip stitch (on top of berry), single crochet stitch (on top of slip stitch) until the end of the row. You should have 2 slip stitches at the end. Chain 1 and turn.

Step 5.

Fourth Row: In the 2nd stitch of the row slip stitch. Next stich berry stitch. Repeat “slip stitch, berry stitch”. Ending with 2 slip

Step 6.

Fifth Row: In the 2nd stitch of the row, single crochet. Next, slip stitch. Repeat ” single crochet, slip stitch”. Ending with 2 single crochet stitches. Chain 1 and turn.

Repeat Rows 2-5 until you have the length you want.
